Maybach Music Group rapper Gunplay is aiming high after announcing a new deal with Def Jam Records. Gunplay recently spoke on his upcoming major label debut, and what role his mentor Rick Ross will play in guiding the project.
“The ink just dried,” he told Vibe. “So look out for the untitled album. So far it’s untitled, I’m sitting down with Rozay and we’re going to make everything happen so we can produce the best product possible.”
The Miami native said his longtime followers will not be disappointed with his new label move.
“It just feels like all the work over these years ain’t go in vain,” Gunplay said. “God is good. It’s his plan. I ain’t got nothing to do with this. I’m just here for the ride, bro. I got an album coming out, I just signed with Def Jam two days ago.”
For days, news of Gunplay’s new record deal has been swirling around the music blog world. It was Ross himself who first announced the union through a series of emphatic tweets Tuesday afternoon (July 3):
“Breaking News!!!! @GUNPLAYMMG just Signed Big Solo Lp Deal @MaybachMusicGrp @DefJamRecords Debut Album Coming!!!!! Streets Been Ready!!!” the Maybach Music boss proclaimed on Twitter.
These days, MMG has a lot to celebrate. On Sunday, Wale and collaborator Miguel walked away with a BET Award trophy for Best Collaboration for his hit single “Lotus Flower Bomb.” The Ross-led unit moved nearly 100,000 copies of their Maybach Music Group’s Self Made Vol. 2 album, in its first week.
Next up: Meek Mill’s debut album Dreams and Nightmares and Rick Ross’ God Forgives, I Don’t, which is set to release later this summer. —Keith Murphy, CBS Local
