A new study that tracks illegal downloading across the globe has shown the U.S. as the world’s biggest violators. And while Canadian music pirates mostly passed along American artist Kanye West, U.S. fans made Canadian rapper Drake the most shared artists.
The Digital Music Index is a report produced by Musicmetric, a company that mines data for music trends. Using BitTorrent, Musicmetric analyzed 97 million files over the past six months and determined that the U.S. has pirated more music than any other country, with 96.7 million downloads.
The study found Drake to be the most popular of all U.S. BitTorrent users. In the UK, which logged nearly 43.4 million downloads, singer Ed Sheeran led the pack. Third was Italy (33.2 million) who elevated Laura Pausini.
With America going download happy over Drake, Canada (24 million files) returned the favor, by making Kanye West their biggest artist. Brazil (19.7 million) rounded out the top five pirating countries with Billy Van leading the pack.
