With Frank Ocean’s new album Blonde is finally out and available for everyone to enjoy and scrutinize, one song in particular is receiving extra attention. “Solo (Reprise)” has been placed under the microscope, not simply because of Andre 3000’s collaboration, but because of his lyrics that appear to call out rappers who don’t write their own rhymes.
With astonishment while I’m on punishment
Watchin’ the summer come close to an end
After 20 years in
I’m so naive I was under the
Impression that everyone wrote they own verses
It’s comin’ back different and yea that s— hurts me
I’m hummin’ and whistlin’ to those not deserving
I’m stumbled and lived every word, was I working just way too hard?
While there is no specific mention of Drake, his feud with Meek Mill would likely have been front and center in the media around the time Ocean’s album was being written and recorded. Now, it’s public knowledge that Drake is a huge Andre 3000 fan. “I have a shrine in my apartment dedicated to Andre,” he told Paper Magazine in 2010. And even more curious is Andre’s display of adoration for Drake in 2012. “I just liked him as a rapper because I felt he had a balance,” he told Fader.
Could his respect for Drake have been diminished upon learning that the Views rapper had assistance on his lyrics? We will only find out when and if Andre starts naming names.
